Climate change is already affecting New Zealand through increasing temperatures, more extreme rainfall events and sea-level rise. This will continue for many decades to come, with the magnitude of future changes depending on global action to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions (e.g. carbon dioxide) which cause global heating. New Zealand’s weather and climate may become more variable in the future, with changes to seasonal rainfall patterns, more extreme wet and dry periods, increased drought and fire risk, and more heatwaves. These climatic changes may have impacts on all sectors of New Zealand’s economy, society and our natural environment.
